Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagrams illustrate the changes that have been made to a college cafeteria from the past to the present day.

Overall, the cafeteria has undergone significant redevelopment, with several new facilities being introduced, including a salad bar, coffee bar, recycling bins, a barbecue area, and an outdoor seating area. However, some features, such as the kitchen, toilets, and central seating area, have remained unchanged.

To begin with, the serving area for food and drinks on the northern side of the cafeteria has been completely replaced by an area for hot meals. Opposite this, the former staff dining rooms have been divided into two separate zones: a coffee bar and a takeaway food area. In addition, the bin on the eastern side has been replaced by recycling bins.

Furthermore, a new salad bar has been constructed on the western side of the cafeteria. Another major change is the development of an outdoor seating area along the southern side. A barbecue area has also been added in the southwestern corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign. You have successfully highlighted key changes, such as the addition of the salad bar, coffee bar, and outdoor seating, while noting what remained constant. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide more specific comparisons regarding the spatial layout or the scale of the changes, rather than just listing the additions. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers all requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing the changes. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving systematically through the different areas of the cafe. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To begin with,' 'In addition,' and 'Furthermore,' which help to guide the reader through the description. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the report. The structure is sound and supports the information well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes accurately, such as 'redevelopment,' 'constructed,' and 'transformed.' The terminology is appropriate for the context of describing plans. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms to describe the spatial shifts and the nature of the modifications. However, there are no errors in word choice, and the language used is natural and fits the task requirements well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the passive voice construction 'has been completely replaced' and 'has been constructed,' which is highly appropriate for describing changes in a formal report. The punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The sentences are generally error-free, showing good control over tense and subject-verb agreement. The writing is clear, professional, and grammatically sound throughout.
