The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided pictures shows us the architectural view of the college canteen before and after of its renovation.

Overall, the area occupied by the canteen is still the same. Inside the Cafe , it is redesigned like some of the serving area are still having their place but many new area like salad bar at the mid of left wall, barbecue area is built at outside of the cafe but parallel to salad bar many other options are introduced.

Firstly, the kitchen area is on the same place. The previous area located for serving area in now converted into hot meals. Then outside of kitchen's door there is an enormous dining hall, chairs and tables remain same but the salad bar is launched at the left side of canteen wall. The staff dining rooms is now redesigned and converted into take away food and coffee bar.

Continuing with the refreshment rooms and recycling areas, they are never rebuilt. New advanced areas are invented at the outer side of canteen which is outdoor seating and BBQ area which is along with the side of salad bar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of the salad bar, BBQ area, and the conversion of the staff dining room. However, the description is somewhat imprecise; for example, stating the kitchen is 'on the same place' is vague, and the claim that the dining hall chairs and tables 'remain same' is not clearly supported by the visual evidence. While the overview identifies the main change (the redesign), it lacks a more analytical summary of the spatial shifts. The report is functional but would benefit from a more precise comparison of the layout changes to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organised into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the cafe. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Then', and 'Continuing with' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'parallel to salad bar many other options are introduced', which lacks a clear connection to the preceding sentence. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the flow between ideas could be smoother to improve the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'architectural view', 'renovation', and 'enormous'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'area located for serving area in now converted' and 'new advanced areas are invented'. The word 'invented' is inappropriate in this context; 'introduced' or 'added' would be more accurate. The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but the lack of precision in word choice limits the score to a 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The provided pictures shows us') and awkward phrasing ('before and after of its renovation'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor errors with commas and capitalization (e.g., 'Cafe'). While the meaning is clear and the errors do not impede communication, the frequency of these slips prevents a higher score. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
