Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the kitchen, serving areas, and the addition of outdoor seating. However, the description is sometimes imprecise. For instance, stating the kitchen 'remained the same' ignores the significant change in the serving counter layout. While the overview captures the essence of the changes, the report lacks a clear, analytical comparison of the spatial flow. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key changes are described with greater precision and that the overview highlights the most significant transformations rather than just general observations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the redesign. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition 'Whereas, the staff dining rooms...' and the fragmented sentence structure in the third paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas. The use of linking words is present but could be more varied and sophisticated to enhance the logical connection between the before and after states.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'utilised' and 'efficiency', but the range is somewhat limited. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'addition in number was made' instead of 'the number of bins was increased'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the phrasing is occasionally repetitive. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations related to spatial descriptions and design changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the cafe after redesigning', 'on the left side of the cafe') and prepositions. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'the cafe utilised the space wisely with increasing the capacity', which would be better phrased as 'by increasing the capacity'. Punctuation is mostly functional, but there are some issues with spacing and comma usage. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
