The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given plans illustrate a college cafe before and after it was redesigned. Overall, the cafe had undergone significant changes and shows the addition of an outdoor seating area along with a barbecue station.

Before remodelling the cafe, the space below the kitchen was a serving area, including all food items and drinks, whereas after redesigning it, it was replaced by a hot meals section. Additionally, on the eastern side of tables and chairs, a salad bar was constructed, which used to be an empty space before.

Furthermore, the staff dining rooms were made into separate rooms, where one is used for a takeaway food area, while the other is a coffee bar. In addition, the bin area is expanded into a larger recycling bin area. Moreover, towards the southern end of the cafe, a new, bigger space was constructed with two doors to an outdoor seating area with five tables and 26 chairs, and a barbecue station was built to the extreme left of the seating area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, including the new outdoor area, the barbecue station, and the internal reorganisation of the kitchen and dining facilities. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the diagrams. To reach a higher band, ensure you consistently use precise comparative language. For instance, while you mention the bin area was 'expanded', you could provide more specific detail on the scale of these changes. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively, providing a clear summary of the transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction followed by body paragraphs that group information by location and function. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'additionally', 'furthermore', and 'in addition' to link ideas. The progression of information is easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of the description. To improve, ensure that the transition between the internal changes and the external additions is slightly smoother to enhance the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'remodelled', 'redesigned', 'constructed', and 'expanded'. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for a report on a diagram. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items related to architectural changes, such as 'converted into', 'relocated', or 'integrated', to show greater flexibility and precision in your descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are minor issues, such as the phrasing 'on the eastern side of tables and chairs', which is slightly awkward; it would be clearer to say 'to the east of the seating area'. However, these minor slips do not interfere with the clarity of your report. Your use of passive voice to describe the changes is appropriate for this type of task.
