Student answer (Band 7.5)
Overall, the redesign expanded and diversified the food serving areas while adding outdoor seating. Dedicated staff dining spaces were replaced with commercial options, and waste disposal facilities were modernized to handle recycling.
Key Changes & Structural Layout
Food Counter Diversification: The original single Serving area (all food & drink) connected to the main Kitchen was converted into a dedicated Hot meals counter. Three new specialized counters were added: a Salad bar along the western wall, and dedicated Take away food and Coffee bar counters along the northern wall.
Repurposed Facilities: The two private Staff dining rooms along the northern section were removed to make way for the new takeaway and coffee counters, opening up food choices to all visitors.
Expanded Seating: The central indoor area retained its main Tables and chairs, but a new south-facing exit now connects to a freshly built Outdoor seating area equipped with five additional tables and a Barbecue station at the southwestern corner.
Waste & Restroom Upgrades: While the Toilets in the southeastern corner remained in their original position, the single Bin near the eastern entrance was expanded into a dedicated Recycling bins area.

The response effectively summarizes the main features of the cafe redesign. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the diversification of food counters, the removal of staff dining rooms, the addition of outdoor seating, and the modernization of waste facilities. The overview provides a clear summary of the transformation, and the body paragraphs are well-organized to highlight specific areas of change. The information is accurate and relevant to the provided plans, and you have made appropriate comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. The response fully satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear structure. The use of headings and bullet-point-style paragraphs makes the information very easy to follow. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the redesign, which aids progression. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'While the Toilets... remained in their original position' and 'The original single Serving area... was converted into'. The referencing is clear, and the overall flow is smooth. The paragraphing is appropriate for a report of this nature, ensuring that the information is presented in a coherent and professional manner.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing plans and changes. Terms like 'diversified', 'repurposed', 'modernized', and 'specialized' are used accurately. The language is precise and fits the context of the task well. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated descriptive phrases could elevate the response further, but the current range is sufficient to convey the information clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response exhibits a high level of grammatical control. You use a variety of sentence structures, including passive voice constructions ('was converted into', 'were removed') which are highly appropriate for describing changes in a layout. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. There are no noticeable grammatical slips that impede communication. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the writing is clear and professional, reflecting a high level of accuracy.
