The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given floor plan illustrates a college cafe previously and how it is structured now after redesigning. The previous structure had a lot of vacant space inside the cafe while the new flooring has addition of outdoor seating as well.

On observation, a few places which remained unchanged are the designated kitchen area as well as the toilets. The staff dining rooms are transformed into take away and coffee bar segments. Area of table and chairs also remain in the same position in the indoor seating but addition is done for outdoor seating in order to accomodate more students as well as staff. The serving area for food and drinks in the uppermost area is converted into a hot meals spot. Instead of just waste bins, new renovation has recycling bins for proper waste management.

There are also a completely new area designated to salad bar and barbeque which was missing in the previous design. In comparison, we can state that the new redesign has more elements to the cafe and ideally holds more capacity to accomodate customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign well. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the addition of outdoor seating, the salad/barbeque area, and the conversion of the staff dining room. However, the overview is somewhat weak; while you mention that the new design has 'more elements', a more effective overview would explicitly contrast the overall layout shift from a more open, sparse space to a more functional, high-capacity environment. The report is accurate, but could be improved by grouping features more logically (e.g., structural changes vs. functional additions) to provide a clearer summary of the transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into three paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On observation', 'In comparison', and 'Instead of', which help guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the kitchen/toilets and the seating area could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the main body of changes, and the concluding summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally and that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is more tightly linked.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'designated', 'transformed', 'accomodate', and 'waste management'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'accomodate' (should be 'accommodate'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. For example, instead of 'new renovation has', you could use 'the redesign incorporates'. The range is functional but limited in terms of demonstrating a wider variety of topic-specific collocations or more precise descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'The previous structure had a lot of vacant space inside the cafe while the new flooring has addition of outdoor seating as well' (missing articles: 'the addition of'). Another example is 'There are also a completely new area', where the verb 'are' does not agree with the singular noun 'area'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally correct. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
