The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plan demonstrates the college cafe, the above diagram shows how the cafe looked like before the redesign, while the below one shows how it looks now.
Overall, the new design changed and organized the spaces and added some more sections and utilized the area more efficiently.
In this first diagram the cafe has four main sections. There is one main entrance to the cafe's main hall on the right side. To the left of the entrance a bin is placed, and toilets and the left corner. The main hall has tables and chairs and just in the middle right there's staff dining rooms.
The kitchen is on the right most corner of the hall. Furthermore, the serving area is inside the kitchen.
In contrast, the new design has some more sections added and some are changed. The overall shape of the cafe is the same, just some additional sections and some changes to the previous sections are made. Entrance on the right of the hall as it was, and the recycle bins and toilets on the left. Chairs and tables are on the same place but the staff dining rooms are changed to the take away food and coffee bar. The kitchen is there but the serving area in the kitchen is replaced with hot meals. Straight in the left of hall salad bar is added. One big addition to the new cafe is the outdoor seating and there a barbecue section, which has two entrances from the main hall.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response provides a clear overview of the original and redesigned cafe, outlining the main features. However, further detail could improve clarity and comparison. The mention of specific areas like the 'takeaway food and coffee bar' versus the previous 'staff dining room' is helpful, but the report could benefit from a stronger comparative structure. The conclusion could summarize the major enhancements more distinctly. Overall, the task is generally addressed, though it lacks a bit of depth in description and comparison of the changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
Coherence and cohesion are generally maintained throughout the writing. The use of linking phrases such as 'In contrast' effectively helps organize the information. However, some sentences could be more nuanced to improve flow, such as "the staff dining rooms are changed to the takeaway food and coffee bar," which could be revised for smoother transition. Additionally, there are areas where paragraphs could be better organized to highlight changes, making it easier for the reader to follow the narrative. Overall, while the organization is solid, increased clarity could enhance coherence further.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a good use of vocabulary, yet some word choices could be improved for precision and variety. Terms like "some more sections added" and "recycle bins" could benefit from more formal alternatives such as "additional sections introduced" and "recycling receptacles." There's an attempt to vary language, but repetitive phrases such as "on the right side" should be rephrased to avoid redundancy. Overall, while enough vocabulary is used to convey meaning, less common synonyms and varied expressions would enhance lexical resource further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The grammatical range is somewhat limited; the writer uses mostly simple and compound sentences, which can make the writing appear less sophisticated. Some grammatical errors, such as "the recycle bins and toilets on the left" lacking a verb, affect the clarity of the sentence. Additionally, phrases such as "the left corner" could be enhanced with more accurate expression, like "the left corner of the cafe." Meanwhile, the overall sentence structures are mostly correct, reflecting an adequate grasp of grammar while allowing some scope for greater complexity and variety for higher scores.
Overall feedback
The response effectively presents the main features of the cafe's redesign, showcasing a clear understanding of the task. The use of contrasting phrases helps in organizing the information. However, there is room for improvement in vocabulary choice and grammatical complexity. Focusing on using synonyms for common words and varying sentence structure can enhance the sophistication of the writing. Additionally, aiming for clearer comparisons and more detailed descriptions will improve the task achievement score. Practicing writing with more complex sentences could also bolster the grammatical range and accuracy.
