Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student provides a clear overview of the changes made to the college cafe and highlights both the old and new features effectively. They mention the increase in space and the introduction of new facilities, fulfilling the task requirements. However, minor details about the layout changes could be better elaborated. Phrases like 'substantially larger' and 'much wider range of facilities' are appropriate, but the overall explanation would benefit from comparing specific changes more sharply. The Task Achievement score reflects a good overall coverage of the topic, but a more precise comparison could improve the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is generally well-structured, with an overview followed by specific details about the changes. The use of linking words such as 'while,' 'at present,' and 'also' helps to create flow in the description. However, occasionally the ideas could be organized more clearly. For instance, discussing the locations of the new amenities in relation to the old layout could enhance coherence. Some sentences could connect better for increased cohesion, suggesting room for improvement in organizing details relative to one another.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The lexical resource is mostly appropriate, with a good range of vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'redevelopment', 'amenities', and 'facilities'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and some inaccuracies, such as 'recycling bins instead of simple bin' where an article is needed. The phrase 'opened a small Salad bar on the south' could have used 'has added' instead for better clarity. Overall, while the vocabulary is varied, it lacks precision in some parts, indicating a need for further refinement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

Grammatical range and accuracy are relatively strong; the student uses various sentence structures and forms appropriately. However, there are notices of errors, such as 'are remain' instead of 'remain' and 'provides outside seating' which should be 'provide'. The student also sometimes incorrectly uses articles (e.g., 'a small toilets' instead of 'a small toilet'). While these do not severely detract from comprehension, they do affect the overall grammatical accuracy and range.

Overall feedback

This response shows a solid understanding of the task, providing a clear summary of the changes to the college cafe. Strengths include the identification of new features and overall comparisons. To enhance your performance, focus on creating clearer connections between ideas and expanding on specific changes to improve coherence. Additionally, refining your vocabulary choice and ensuring grammatical accuracy will elevate your writing. Pay attention to articles and pluralization, as these small details can impact your score. Overall, you're on the right track; keep practicing to solidify these areas!
