Student answer (Band 6.0)

Two maps illustrate how college cafe has changed after redesigned it.

Overall, the cafe has undergone significant redevelopment, with many noticeable changes like newly designed outdoor seating, including hot meals section and barbecue added in new design. Also some changes like entrance for incoming and outgoing.

In the map before renovations the entrance and outgoing door was on the east direction and according to new changes it has added new doors at the south direction. On the east direction of tables and chair area new section are added and it calls the salad bar. The new take away food and coffee bar are newly added at the place of staff dining rooms.

On the north-west corner the hot meals section took place of serving area of all food and drink. New outdoor seating is located at the south direction of the cafe with barbecue outside of the cafe. The bin has renamed with recycling bins. However, toilets and kitchen remain same as before.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the new seating, the salad bar, and the relocation of the hot meals section. However, the overview is slightly disjointed and lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes. While the response identifies key additions like the outdoor seating and the barbecue, it misses some nuances in the spatial layout changes. The description of the entrance and doors is a bit confusing, and the report would benefit from a more structured approach to comparing the 'before' and 'after' states to ensure all key information is highlighted clearly for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the description. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'newly added' and 'on the... direction'. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when describing the doors and the layout changes, which makes it difficult for the reader to visualize the exact shifts in the cafe's floor plan.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes effectively. There are attempts to use specific terminology like 'redevelopment', 'renovations', and 'recycling bins'. However, there are some awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'on the east direction' (should be 'on the east side') and 'it calls the salad bar' (should be 'it is called'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'after redesigned it' (should be 'after it was redesigned'), 'the entrance and outgoing door was' (should be 'were'), and 'toilets and kitchen remain same' (should be 'remain the same'). These errors occur frequently but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing processes and changes in diagrams.
