The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given two maps compares the design of a college cafe before and after renovation.
Overall, the building has undergone significant redevelopment. Staff dining area has been removed and outdoor space is allocated to seating and barbecue.
Prior to redevelopment, the south-east corner of the central area was devoted to toilets with a bin in front of it. The middle portion contains tables and chairs and two rooms were designated for staff dining. The kitchen area was on north- west side with a serving area in front of that where people can buy food and drinks.
After Resign, toilets were in tha same area but bin was converted into recycling bin. Moreover, the two staff dinning rooms were replaced by food take away and coffee shop. A salad bar was also opened in the left side of main central hall. The former Serving area has been removed and is changed into Hot meals corner. A notable development has been seen outside the main area where a barbeque point and public seating is added.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the cafe redesign, including the removal of staff dining areas, the addition of a salad bar, and the new outdoor facilities. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise spatial descriptions. For instance, stating 'left side of main central hall' is somewhat vague. Additionally, while the main features are identified, the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states could be more integrated to better highlight the transformation. Overall, the response successfully addresses the prompt and provides a clear summary of the visual information provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the changes. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the general layout to specific modifications. Cohesive devices such as 'Prior to redevelopment', 'Moreover', and 'After Resign' (though misspelled) are used to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the 'before' and 'after' states. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure that transitions between sentences are smoother and avoid minor mechanical errors in referencing, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the transition to the final paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'redevelopment', 'allocated', 'designated', and 'converted' used correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'Resign' instead of 'redesign', 'dinning' instead of 'dining', and 'tha' instead of 'the'. These errors do not impede communication but prevent the response from reaching a higher band. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to describe the changes, but incorporating more precise collocations related to architectural changes would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'The given two maps compares' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'toilets were in tha same area' (spelling and article usage). While the meaning is always clear, these frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation suggest a lack of full control over complex structures. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for basic spelling mistakes. The majority of the sentences are understandable, but the frequency of errors keeps the score in the 6.0 range.
