Student answer (Band 4.5)

The table which shows a university cafe’s kitchen before it was redesigned and after how it looks.

Overall, in this table as we all have seen that cafe before redesign and after looks I this table there are lot of comparison or a lot of changes are there in there plans or added some new items in there new cafe.

In Detail, As we can see that in cafe's kitchen some new things are added like - Hot meals, Take away food, Salad bar, outdoor seating, etc... and there are lots of changes are also there which we have seen as recycling bin is now taking lot of space which is good for cleaning purpose. Before there is no outdoor seating and salad bar but after there is which is most important thing to put in cafe's kitchen. The Best things I have seen in kitchen is Hot meals which is most attractive and interesting thing and is good for people for there health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to adequately summarize the information provided in the plans. Instead of objectively describing the layout changes, the text includes subjective commentary, such as calling the hot meals 'the most attractive and interesting thing,' which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. Furthermore, the response refers to the plans as a 'table' throughout, showing a misunderstanding of the visual data. While some features like the salad bar and outdoor seating are mentioned, the overall description lacks the necessary precision and analytical focus required for this task. The response does not provide a clear overview or a structured comparison of the spatial changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The essay lacks a logical structure. The introduction is repetitive and fails to clearly state what the plans represent. Paragraphing is present but ineffective, as the ideas within the paragraphs are not logically sequenced. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often misused, such as 'In Detail, As we can see that,' which does not serve as a natural transition. The referencing is also unclear; the writer frequently uses 'there' and 'it' without establishing clear antecedents, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of the description.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The writer relies on basic, informal language such as 'things,' 'good,' and 'nice' (implied). There is a lack of precise terminology related to describing maps or floor plans, such as 'relocated,' 'expanded,' 'partitioned,' or 'adjacent.' The misuse of the word 'table' to describe a diagram indicates a lack of awareness regarding the task requirements. Additionally, the phrasing is often unidiomatic, such as 'most important thing to put in cafe's kitchen,' which hinders the professional tone expected in an IELTS Academic task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'there is no outdoor seating... but after there is'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or fragmented, such as 'The Best things I have seen in kitchen is Hot meals which is most attractive and interesting thing and is good for people for there health.' The misuse of 'there' versus 'their' is consistent throughout the text. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple, error-prone sentences.
