The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illustrates the college cafe before it was modified and cafe after it is developed with several facilities.
Overall, it is evident that there has been a new addition to the cafe which is outdoor seating and barbecue along with salad bar. Also, staff dining room is refurbished into take away food and coffee bar.
Before the college cafe was redesigned there was a staff dining room and bins which after modifications changed into coffee bar along with take away food and recycling bin which helps recycle the waste. Now, the cafe has outdoor seatings for those who want to enjoy the view along with barbecue and salad bar which is inside the cafe. Moreover, toilets and kitchen remains the same but the serving area is now changed into place where hot meals are available. However, tables and chair are still in the same area and has not been changed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the new outdoor area, the conversion of the staff dining room, and the changes to the serving area. However, the description of the layout is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, analytical overview of the spatial changes. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states could be more precise. For instance, the mention of the salad bar being 'inside' is slightly ambiguous given the visual evidence. To reach a higher band, ensure that the summary highlights the most significant changes more distinctly rather than listing them in a narrative style.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure for this task. There is a clear introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph detailing the changes. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'also' and 'moreover'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the description of the staff room and the outdoor seating could be smoother. The referencing is mostly accurate, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the limited range of linking words employed.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes using terms like 'refurbished', 'modified', and 'recycling bin'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'maps' (these are floor plans, not maps) and 'place where hot meals are available' (which is wordy). There is little evidence of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise terminology related to architectural changes and spatial descriptions, such as 'transformed', 'relocated', or 'extended'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The two maps illustrates', 'tables and chair are') and tense inconsistencies ('cafe after it is developed'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The student attempts to use complex structures, but they are often marred by these slips. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and ensuring consistent tense usage when describing past and present states would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
