Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the kitchen, serving area, and seating arrangements. However, the description is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the student identifies key changes, the reporting is often descriptive rather than comparative. For instance, stating 'the kitchen are at same places' is a basic observation. To reach a higher band, the response should group information more logically (e.g., structural changes vs. equipment additions) and provide a more sophisticated summary of the overall transformation, rather than listing features in a disjointed manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the flow between sentences is often mechanical and repetitive. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes inaccurate, such as the frequent use of 'before redesigned' and 'now they have designed'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of the changes. The text lacks a variety of linking words, relying heavily on simple conjunctions. Improving the use of transition signals and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, relying on basic verbs like 'designed' and 'made'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'staff dinning rooms' (dining rooms) and 'the kitchen are at same places'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe the layout changes, often resorting to informal phrasing. To improve, the student should focus on learning specific vocabulary related to describing plans and maps, such as 'relocated', 'partitioned', 'converted', or 'extended', and pay closer attention to pluralisation and article usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('the kitchen are', 'the tables and chairs at a same place'), article usage, and tense consistency. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with few attempts at complex sentences. When complex structures are attempted, they often contain errors, such as 'there are many changes have been before redesigned'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and incorrect spacing. A focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors would be beneficial.
