Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Overall, the college cafe looks pretty modernised and well designed where the concept of outside seating is introduced in the redesigned cafe. The space is well-utilised in the redesign of the cafe and everything seems to well planned and maintained.

In the old cafe, the northern most part of the cafe had a kitchen with a separate section of serving area of food and drinks. In the main section of the cafe, the staff dining rooms were present and the remaining part consisted of tables and chairs of the cafe.

Whereas, the redesigned cafe has replaced the serving area to a section for hot meals and the staff dining rooms are converted into two sections of take away food and coffee bar. The normal bins are replaced with recycling bins. Barbecue is introduced in the open area along with that an outside seating for people has been arranged who wants to enjoy barbecue. A salad bar as well is present for specific customers in the new design.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of the outdoor area and the reconfiguration of the interior. However, the report lacks a clear overview of the most significant changes, such as the expansion of the seating capacity or the shift in the kitchen's layout. The description is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical; for instance, it lists changes without fully comparing the scale or impact of these modifications. To reach a higher band, you should focus on grouping the information more logically—perhaps by interior versus exterior changes—and ensuring that the most striking differences are highlighted in the introduction or overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the old layout to the new one. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Phrases like 'In the old cafe' and 'Whereas' are used, but the transition between sentences could be smoother. Some ideas are presented in a list-like fashion, which limits the flow. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the comparison of the two plans.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the changes clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'redesigned', 'well-utilised', and 'reconfigured'. However, there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would elevate the response. For example, instead of saying 'the northern most part of the cafe had a kitchen', you could use more descriptive language regarding the spatial arrangement. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'modernised' and 'well planned', which could be expressed with more academic precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'everything seems to well planned' is missing a verb, and 'an outside seating for people has been arranged who wants to enjoy' contains a relative clause error. Additionally, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'the northern most part of the cafe had a kitchen with a separate section of serving area of food and drinks'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
