Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the changes in the cafe, but it fails to provide a clear overview or a logical summary of the main features. The description is fragmented and lacks a professional tone. While the student identifies some changes, such as the salad bar and outdoor seating, the information is presented in a disorganized manner. The conclusion is inaccurate, as it mentions 'future' changes, which are not present in the prompt. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant transformations and grouping them logically rather than listing details randomly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the internal flow is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'furthermore' and 'on the other hand', which do not always logically connect the ideas. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states. The progression of ideas is not smooth, and the lack of clear topic sentences makes the structure feel disjointed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'waste things in baskets' instead of 'recycling bins' or 'waste disposal area'. The student relies on basic, informal language that is not appropriate for an academic report. There are also several spelling errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'new chaning involved in cafe'. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to floor plans and spatial descriptions, and work on accurate word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammar is characterized by frequent errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'This diagram illustrate', 'old cafe have'), missing articles, and incorrect tense usage. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in grammatical inaccuracies. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and incorrect capitalization. To improve, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that verbs agree with their subjects and that articles are used correctly.
