The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates the college cafe before reconstruction and the new design.
Overall in the new building there are two exits and two entrance ways. There is the affition of outdoor seating. Salad bar is introduced in the building. Moreover the area reserved for staff dining room is replaced with the take away food and coffee bar. A barbecue section is introduced outside the cafe.
Firstly, the entrance remains the same but there is the another entrance in the new idea. Tables and chairs and kitchen areas is exactly in the same order as it was before. The service area is now altered into hot meals sector. A salad bar is started inside the cafe in front of the kitchen entrance. Staff dining rooms are eliminated and take away food and coffee bar is placed in the same point.
In front of the new entrance and exit there is the new arrangements of outdoor seating and a barbecue section in initiated beside it.
In my opinion the new designed map is incredible according to the modern needs and shows perfect changes and covers more space according to advanced requirements.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the new outdoor seating, the barbecue area, and the changes to the service and staff areas. However, the response lacks a clear, analytical overview that synthesises the changes effectively. The final paragraph is subjective ('In my opinion the new designed map is incredible'), which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report; you must remain objective and focus solely on describing the visual data. To improve, ensure you group information logically rather than listing changes, and avoid personal commentary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Moreover'). Some transitions are awkward, such as 'the entrance remains the same but there is the another entrance'. The progression of ideas could be smoother; for instance, grouping all structural changes together before discussing the interior layout would create a more logical flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to track which specific part of the cafe is being described.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'reconstruction', 'eliminated', and 'redesigned'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'affition' (likely a misspelling of addition), 'hot meals sector', and 'the same point'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more accurate collocations related to maps and diagrams, such as 'relocated', 'transformed', or 'converted'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'the another entrance', 'Tables and chairs and kitchen areas is' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'the new designed map'. Articles are also frequently misused or omitted. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur often enough to limit your score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
