The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The cafe that is showing in the image illustrates 2 different designs as how the cafe looks before and hoe it looks after redesigning. Before when the cafe was not redesigned it was looking good but not more attractive and effective. The overall cafe's area is not utilized well as it should be, the kitchen there is directly serving to the customers and the staff dining area is in between the cafe and the other remaining area of was filled with only chairs and tables. And one washroom at corner. This may can cause the decreasing value of the cafe. Because people first come to the cafe which looks beautiful not only from outside but also from inside and is well organized and everything is located there which is essential. And after the cafe is redesigned it looks adorable. Actually, now every section is located at its own place and everything is available there. Well organized kitchen serving area, separate takeaway area and a separate coffee bar there. And it is a new invention also in updated design of barbecue and outdoor seating is also available now.

People who want to sit inside or outside its there choice. And there is also a door from outside towards toilet. There is a Large area for recycling bin also. And now it looks attractive not vulnerable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to provide an objective summary of the visual data. Instead of describing the changes, the writer includes subjective opinions such as 'it was looking good but not more attractive' and 'it looks adorable'. These personal evaluations are not appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. While the writer mentions some features like the kitchen, takeaway area, and outdoor seating, the description is disorganized and lacks a clear overview or a systematic comparison between the two plans. The response focuses on personal preference rather than reporting the main features as required by the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay lacks a logical structure. It is written as a single, rambling paragraph rather than using clear paragraphing to separate the 'before' and 'after' states. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'and' to connect unrelated ideas. The progression of information is confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two plans. There is no clear introduction or summary of the main trends, which is essential for a coherent report.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary is very limited and often inappropriate for an academic report. The writer uses informal and subjective language like 'adorable', 'looks good', and 'new invention' instead of precise, descriptive terminology suitable for describing architectural plans. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'decreasing value of the cafe' and 'not vulnerable', which do not accurately convey the intended meaning. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the spatial changes effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There are significant issues with sentence structure, such as 'The cafe that is showing in the image illustrates 2 different designs as how the cafe looks before and hoe it looks after redesigning.' Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. The writer relies on simple, often fragmented sentences, and attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, such as 'This may can cause the decreasing value'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, which further detracts from the overall quality.
