The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans present past condition of a college cafeteria before it was renovated and its present situation.

Overall, the kitchen, toilet area, and trash can place remains the same before and after cafe's development. The number of sections for various kinds of foods has increased. There are facilities for extra activties now.

Previoulsy, the section where all kind of meals were available was only one. There were separate dining rooms for staff. There were no facilities or sections for extra activties.

Presently, the number of sections rose up. There are separate sections for each type of food or activity. For instance, hot meals are available in different area. Salad bar section is separate. Coffee bar and section of take-away food is on one side separated by a border. Furthermore, there are sectors for fun activties, such as, outdoor sitting, and barbecue. However, Toilets and trash cane are in the same place as before.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, noting both the static elements (toilets, trash) and the significant changes (new food sections, outdoor facilities). However, the description is somewhat generic. For instance, mentioning 'the number of sections rose up' lacks the precision expected in an Academic Task 1 report. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details from the visual data, such as the relocation of the entrance or the specific layout changes. The overview is present but could be more integrated into the body paragraphs to ensure a more analytical approach rather than just listing changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the general layout to specific changes. You use some cohesive devices like 'For instance', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the connection between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring the overview is distinct and the body paragraphs are balanced. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions feel slightly repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovated', 'facilities', and 'sectors'. However, there are several spelling errors ('Previoulsy', 'activties', 'cane') and some awkward phrasing, such as 'trash can place' and 'sections for extra activties'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to describing maps or plans, such as 'the layout was transformed' or 'the area was repurposed'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent minor grammatical errors, such as 'the section where all kind of meals were available was only one' and 'trash cane are in the same place'. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors and try to incorporate more varied complex structures with greater accuracy.
