Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given diagrams illustrate how a cafe was redesigned and show its layout today.
Overall, a significant number of changes were made to the cafe's layout. While several new modern facilities were added to the renovated building, a few original features remained completely unchanged.
Looking at the details, the original layout features two distinct sections in the northern part of the map, which consisted of a kitchen and a serving area. In the redesigned cafe, this entire space has been converted into a kitchen and a hot meal section. Meanwhile, the staff dining room located near the cafe entrance in the past has been introduced a take-away food counter and a coffee bar.
Furthermore, a few elements remain the same in both the past and present layouts, such as the recycling bin, the toilets and the tables and chairs. In addition, new features were added to the western side of the redesigned cafe, including what appears to be a salad bar. Finally, outdoor facilities have been expanded to included an outdoor seating area and additional bathrooms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, including the changes in the kitchen area and the addition of new facilities. Your overview provides a clear summary of the transformation. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise. For instance, you mention the staff dining room was 'introduced a take-away food counter', which is grammatically awkward and slightly unclear regarding the spatial shift. Additionally, ensure you cover all significant changes; while you mention the salad bar and outdoor seating, a more systematic comparison of the layout's flow would strengthen the response. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the changes. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each section focusing on a specific aspect of the redesign. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother. For example, the shift from describing the kitchen to the staff dining room could be more fluid. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the logical flow between the past and present descriptions would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redesigned', 'converted', and 'expanded'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the staff dining room... has been introduced a take-away food counter', which is not idiomatic. Using 'replaced by' or 'transformed into' would be more precise. Despite these minor issues, your vocabulary is adequate to convey the information clearly and effectively throughout the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While several new modern facilities were added... a few original features remained...'. This shows a good command of sentence variety. However, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'has been introduced a take-away food counter' (passive voice error) and 'expanded to included' (should be 'include'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading of verb forms and infinitives. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score.
