Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, reaching only 90 words. This significantly impacts the development of the task. While the student identifies some changes, such as the addition of the outdoor seating and the coffee bar, the description is superficial and lacks a clear overview or a structured comparison of the two plans. The analysis is under-developed, and the response lacks the necessary detail to fully address the prompt. To improve, the student must provide a clear summary of the main trends and ensure all features are described with sufficient detail to meet the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response is written as a single, long paragraph without clear sentence boundaries or logical progression. There is a lack of cohesive devices, making the text feel like a stream of consciousness rather than a structured report. Punctuation is almost entirely absent, which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information. To improve, the student should use clear paragraphing (introduction, overview, and body paragraphs) and incorporate linking words such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', and 'furthermore' to connect ideas logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying on simple descriptors like 'good', 'attractive', and 'looks'. There is little attempt to use academic or descriptive language appropriate for a report on a floor plan. Phrases like 'looks so good' are informal and unsuitable for an Academic Task 1 response. The student should aim to use more precise vocabulary related to spatial changes, such as 'transformed', 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'installed', to better describe the modifications shown in the diagrams.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammar is significantly flawed, characterized by a lack of sentence punctuation (full stops and commas). This leads to run-on sentences that impede readability. There are frequent errors in verb tense and subject-verb agreement, such as 'before redesign the cafe have no coffee bar'. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple, poorly connected clauses. To improve, the student must focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and correctly using punctuation to separate distinct ideas.
