The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Redesigning of the cafe is a great idea as it could increase the inflow of customers in the cafe.

Starting from the seating, the addition of more seats outdoors in the new cafe increases the number of people that could be accommodated at once when compared to the previous structure where there was no outdoor seating available. Moreover, The staff dining rooms have been replaced with take away food and a coffee bar which increases the range of menu beyond food meals to coffee and people could take away food as well. Furthermore, the option of Barbecue in the outdoors in the new cafe is extremely fun and creative, as this would again add more options in the menu and thus increasing the popularity of the cafe. Additionally, replacing normal bins with recycling bins is quite strategical as this reduces the pollution in the atmosphere by recycling the contents of the bin.

Therefore, In my opinion the changes in the cafe structure would have certainly put a positive impact on the cafe; increasing its menu, and relatively increasing the popularity of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report. Instead of providing an objective summary of the visual data, the response adopts an informal, subjective tone, offering personal opinions such as 'Redesigning of the cafe is a great idea' and 'is extremely fun and creative'. Task 1 requires a neutral, analytical description of the changes shown in the diagrams. By focusing on personal evaluation rather than reporting the main features and making comparisons, the response does not fulfill the core task requirements. To improve, you must remain objective, avoid personal opinions, and focus entirely on describing the spatial and structural changes shown in the diagrams.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Starting from', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally'. However, the logical progression is hindered by the subjective nature of the content. The transition between describing the physical changes and providing personal commentary is often abrupt. While the paragraphing is present, the overall structure lacks the analytical flow expected in a report. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, and the referencing of the visual information is not always clear or accurate to the provided diagrams.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and academic tone required for a report. Phrases like 'inflow of customers', 'previous structure', and 'strategical' (which should be 'strategic') are used, but there is a reliance on informal language such as 'fun and creative'. The range is limited, and there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'pollution in the atmosphere' when referring to recycling bins, which is not directly supported by the visual data. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise, academic vocabulary to describe spatial changes and trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Redesigning of the cafe' (should be 'The redesign of the cafe'), 'beyond food meals' (awkward phrasing), and 'would have certainly put a positive impact' (should be 'would certainly have a positive impact'). Punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with the unnecessary capitalization of 'The' after 'Moreover'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of errors in sentence construction and word order prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and standardizing your sentence structure.
