The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illustrate the changes made to a college cafe before and after it redesigned.
Overall, it is crystal clear that cafe had several changes such as salad bar, take away foods, coffee bar and outdoor seating.
It is apparent form the map that before redesign , there was a kitchen in the north-west part of college cafe with serving food including all food and drinks. In center of the cafe , there were tables and chair and two staff dining rooms on right-hand area. There were also toilets and bin in the eastern part.
Moving further, after redesign, the serving areas was changed into hot meals section and two staff dining rooms were replaced with take away food and coffee bar. A salad bar section was also added and bin was replaced with recycling bins. The cafe has new barbecue section in north-west part along with outdoor seating for customers. However, the kitchen, toilets and main area remained same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign well. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the addition of the salad bar, the coffee bar, and the outdoor seating. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention 'several changes', it would be more effective to highlight the most significant transformation, such as the shift from a single serving area to more specialized zones. The description of the layout is generally accurate, though you could improve by providing more precise spatial comparisons (e.g., noting that the seating area remained central while the perimeter underwent the most significant modifications). Overall, you have addressed the task requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moving further' and 'However' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by minor mechanical errors, such as 'It is apparent form the map' (typo) and 'before redesign' (missing article). The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of information from the general layout to specific changes is clear. To reach a higher band, ensure that your referencing is more precise and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redesigned', 'section', and 'replaced'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'before it redesigned' (should be 'before it was redesigned') and 'serving food including all food and drinks' (which is slightly redundant). You also missed opportunities to use more precise descriptive language for spatial changes. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated synonyms for 'changed' or 'added' would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in center of the cafe', 'in north-west part') and verb forms ('the serving areas was changed'). These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the information. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the consistent use of articles, as well as ensuring that passive voice constructions are formed correctly.
