The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The figures below illustrates the changes made in a college cafe after it is redesigned and compares it with the old one.
Overall, the major change in the design is the addition of the outdoor seating with a barbecue section whereas other areas also had some changes. However, currently the area of the cafe have been extended.
The kitchen design and place remained the same but the area which was previously used for serving drinks has now been replaced with hot meals section. There is an addition of a salad bar by the left wall of the cafe as this portion was not utilized earlier. The place for the tables and chairs remained the same.
The two staff dining rooms have been replaced by a coffee bar section and a take away food portion. The recycling bins have increased and consumes a greater space while the toilets remained exactly the same. A huge difference after the redesigning is the addition of the outdoor seating with a barbecue section at the corner and also addition of two doors to connect this new area with the previous cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the redesign well, including the addition of the outdoor area, the salad bar, and the conversion of the staff rooms. You have successfully identified the key changes and made relevant comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. However, the overview is slightly weak; while it mentions the outdoor seating, it could be more comprehensive by summarizing the general shift in the cafe's layout or functionality. The description of the kitchen area is accurate, but ensure that all comparisons are clearly linked to the specific visual evidence provided in the prompt to reach the highest band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary of changes. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'as', to connect ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved to sound more natural. For instance, the transition between the kitchen changes and the staff dining room changes is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking phrases or better referencing (e.g., 'this area' instead of repeating 'the place') would enhance the cohesion of the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'redesigned', 'utilized', and 'portion'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'consumes a greater space' (which is slightly unnatural; 'occupies more space' would be better) and 'place for the tables' (which could be 'seating area'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to describing maps or floor plans.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the area of the cafe have been extended' should be 'has been extended') and tense inconsistencies ('The figures below illustrates' should be 'illustrate'). Additionally, 'the kitchen design and place remained' is slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and tense consistency will significantly improve your accuracy.
