The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The design shows an old college cafe been restructured into a beautiful model.

Overall, the college cafe used to have only six areas in the building, however it can now be seen that four new and spacious rooms are added to the structure and few adjustments taken place as well.

First and foremost, the previous staff dining rooms are replaced with a coffee bar and a take away stand to reduce customers waiting time and prevent long queues as well. Also a space for a salad bar is created in the far left corner a few meters away from the previous position for tables and chairs.

In addition, the kitchen and toilets are still at their original spots but the area that was used for serving all food and drink have been changed to a location for hot meals also the bin site is developed into recycling bins so wastes can be managed properly. The remolded design have made use of its outer surroundings this time around by creating a number of outdoor seats for customers and placing a barbecue stand adjacent the sitting area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of new facilities and the relocation of existing ones. You successfully identify key changes such as the coffee bar, the salad bar, and the outdoor seating area. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention 'four new rooms,' the visual data shows a more nuanced transformation of existing space rather than just additions. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview highlights the most significant trends, such as the shift toward a more customer-focused layout and the expansion into outdoor space, rather than just listing changes. The report is accurate and addresses all parts of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the cafe's redesign. You use transition signals like 'First and foremost,' 'In addition,' and 'Overall' to guide the reader through the information. However, some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the main body, and the specific changes, which helps the reader follow the progression of the description.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'restructured,' 'spacious,' and 'adjacent.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'remolded design' (which should be 'remodeled') and 'bin site' (which is better described as a 'waste disposal area'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some phrasing is slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to architectural changes and spatial descriptions. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly without causing confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For example, 'The design shows an old college cafe been restructured' should be 'has been restructured,' and 'few adjustments taken place' should be 'few adjustments have taken place.' Additionally, 'The remolded design have made' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('has made'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
