The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans compare a college cafe before its redesign with its current layout.

Overall, significant developments can be seen following the redesign, including the addition of outdoor seating and several alterations to its internal layout.

Kitchen area has remained unchanged, while the serving area, which was previously used for all types of food and drinks is now dedicated to hot meals. Tables and chairs have remained in the same location. The takeaway food point and coffee bar have replaced the staff dining rooms. The toilets have also remained in the same location. Moreover, a salad bar has been added to the left of the tables and chairs. The bin has been relabelled as the recycling bins.

A barbecue area has been added to the south of the salad bar along with an outdoor seating area. The seating area has been added to the left of the barbecue section to provide an additional space for the customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the redesign, including the addition of the outdoor area and the internal modifications. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the new salad bar and the conversion of the staff dining rooms. However, the report could be improved by grouping the information more logically rather than listing changes sequentially. For instance, you could contrast the areas that remained static with those that were completely repurposed. While the overview is clear, the description of the layout changes is slightly mechanical, and a more analytical approach to comparing the 'before' and 'after' states would elevate the response to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction and a general overview. You use some cohesive devices such as 'while', 'moreover', and 'along with' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat unbalanced; the second paragraph is quite dense, while the third is very short. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus—perhaps one for internal changes and one for external additions. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but the transition between the internal layout description and the outdoor area could be more sophisticated to improve the overall progression of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redesign', 'alterations', and 'repurposed' (implied). The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for describing a diagram. However, there is some repetition of simple verbs like 'added' and 'remained'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise synonyms or varied collocations to describe spatial changes, such as 'transformed into', 'relocated', or 'extended'. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in 'the serving area, which was previously used...'. Grammar is generally accurate, and there are no errors that impede communication. However, there are minor issues with article usage, such as 'Kitchen area has remained...' (should be 'The kitchen area') and 'bin has been relabelled' (should be 'The bins have been...'). To achieve a higher band, aim for a greater variety of complex structures and ensure consistent control over articles and pluralization, as these small slips occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
