Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the cafe redesign, but the information is presented in a fragmented and often confusing manner. While you identify some changes, such as the addition of a barbecue and the conversion of the staff dining room, the description lacks the precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. Key features are described vaguely, and the inclusion of non-sensical text at the end of the final paragraph significantly detracts from the task completion. To improve, focus on clearly grouping information by area or type of change and ensure all data points are described accurately without extraneous or unintelligible content.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'before and after' and 'in comparison of'. The referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two plans. The final sentence contains incoherent text, which breaks the flow of the entire response. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'subsequently', 'whereas', 'in contrast') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'changed', 'things', and 'places', which do not demonstrate the range required for higher bands. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'technical changed' instead of 'structural changes' and 'developed from bin' instead of 'replaced the bin'. The use of non-English characters at the end of the text is a significant issue. To improve, aim to use more precise terminology related to maps and diagrams, such as 'transformed', 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'converted'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammar is frequently inaccurate, which often impedes communication. There are consistent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The images illustrates', 'things was added') and sentence structure. Many sentences are poorly constructed, making the meaning obscure. The use of articles and prepositions is also inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and practicing the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing changes in diagrams. Avoid overly complex structures until you have gained better control over basic sentence accuracy.
