The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The plans illustrates the changes made to a college cafe before and after its redesign.
Overall, it is crystal clear that the cafe has undergone several changes and new facilities has been added to the cafe such as hot meals, recycling bin, coffee bar and outdoor seating.
It is apparent from the plan that before redesign, there was a kitchen in the north-western part of the cafe with a serving area for all food and drink. The main part of the cafe contained tables and chairs, while two staff dining rooms were located on the right hand side. There were also toilets and a bin in the eastern part of the cafe.
Moving further, after the redesign, the serving area was changed into a hot meals section and two staff dining rooms replaced by a take away food and coffee bar. A salad bar was also added in western part. In addition, the bin was replaced with recycling bin. The cafe now has new barbecue area and outdoor seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign. You have provided a clear overview and highlighted the key changes, such as the addition of the salad bar and the conversion of the staff dining rooms. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more precise spatial descriptions; for instance, instead of just saying 'western part', you could specify the exact location relative to other features. The report covers all parts of the task well, and the information is accurately selected and presented in a logical manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the 'before' and 'after' states. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moving further' and 'In addition' to link ideas. However, the transition 'Moving further' is slightly unnatural in this context; 'Turning to the changes' or 'Regarding the redesign' would be more appropriate. The progression of information is clear, and the paragraphing is sufficient and effective for this type of task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redesign', 'facilities', and 'undergone'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'The plans illustrates' (subject-verb agreement) and 'new facilities has been added' (plural agreement). While you use some specific vocabulary related to the cafe layout, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'changed' or 'added' and ensure consistent accuracy in word choice and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement, such as 'The plans illustrates' and 'new facilities has been added'. Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage, such as 'replaced by a take away food' (missing 'a') and 'replaced with recycling bin' (missing 'a'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
