Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided diagram compares the layout in college cafe in how it looks presently and before the redesign.
It is clear that the kitchen underwent significant changes after the remodel. Several new facilities have been added including outdoor seating, salad bar and barbecue. In contrast the staff dinning rooms has been replaced with a take away food and coffe bar.
Before the redesign, the kitchen was in top right corner and the lower right corner had the serving area for food and drinks. Two staff dinning rooms were situated at the centre of the cafe . The remainning space was occupied by tables and chairs. A toilet at the corner end on the left and a bin in front of the toilet.
After the redesign, the kitchen remained in the same spot but the serving area was converted to an hot meals spot. Although the tables and chairs was not disturbed, a salad bar was built at thhe right corner. The staff rooms was transformed into spots for take away food at the right and a coffee bar on the left. The toilets and bins were unchanged.
An outdoor seating area and a barbecue site were included to the remodel plans on the outside.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the cafe redesign, including the kitchen, seating, and new additions like the barbecue and outdoor area. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the conversion of staff rooms into a coffee bar and takeaway area. However, the overview could be more integrated; while you mention the kitchen underwent changes, it would be better to state clearly that the overall layout became more customer-focused. The report is accurate, but ensure that all comparisons are explicitly linked to the 'before' and 'after' states to fully meet the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, moving from an introduction to the main changes and then specific details. You use some cohesive devices like 'In contrast' and 'Although', which help the flow. However, the transition between paragraphs is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the final sentence about the outdoor area feels slightly detached from the previous paragraph. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., 'the former staff rooms' instead of repeating 'staff rooms') would help the text feel more cohesive and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'redesign', 'remodeled', 'converted', and 'transformed'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'dinning' (dining), 'coffe' (coffee), 'remainning' (remaining), and 'thhe' (the). While these do not impede communication, they prevent a higher score. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to spatial descriptions, such as 'situated in the north-eastern corner' or 'occupying the central space', rather than relying on simpler directional language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as subject-verb agreement issues: 'tables and chairs was not disturbed' (should be 'were') and 'staff rooms was transformed' (should be 'were'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'in top right corner' (should be 'in the top right corner') and 'included to the remodel plans' (should be 'included in'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your description.
