The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The spatial maps below shows a college cafe before and after it's refurbishment.

Overall, no noticeable change occurred in the structure of the cafe. Only some minor relabeling changes were made and a few food stations were introduced.

The serving area in the Kitchen for all types of food and drink was relabeled and designated for hot meals only. The main in door seating area remained mostly untouched. Similarly, toilets and bin area remained untouched too, only the bins were relabeled as recycling bin.

Keeping in view the current trend of take away food, the staff dining rooms were relabeled as take away food counter and coffee bar. Consequently, the rising trend of healthy food also led to the introduction of a salad bar in the main in door seating area.

To address the increasing number of incoming students, an outdoor seating was also introduced along with a barbecue stand to serve different taste palatte of different students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, identifying key changes such as the new outdoor seating, salad bar, and the repurposing of the staff room. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; stating that 'no noticeable change occurred in the structure' contradicts the addition of an entire outdoor seating area and new internal stations. While the task is addressed, the description of the 'before' and 'after' states could be more precise. The report would benefit from a more analytical approach to the spatial changes rather than focusing heavily on the relabeling of existing rooms, which is a minor detail compared to the structural additions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Similarly', and 'Overall' helps to guide the reader through the comparison. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed, with some very short paragraphs that could be better integrated. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the description of the kitchen and the seating area could be smoother. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner, though the flow could be improved with more varied linking phrases.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'refurbishment', 'designated', and 'repurposed' (implied). There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'spatial maps' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'taste palatte' (spelling error). The phrase 'main in door seating area' is also slightly awkward. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise terminology regarding architectural changes and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'remained untouched'. The range is sufficient to convey the main points clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('The spatial maps below shows') and punctuation issues (e.g., 'take away' should be hyphenated as 'take-away' when used as an adjective). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The use of complex structures is attempted, but accuracy is inconsistent. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and article usage would significantly improve the clarity and professional tone of your writing.
