The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans compare the layout of a present college cafe with a cafe before renovation.

Overall, the cafe underwent significant development with addition of the space for a outdoor seating, a coffee bar, a take away food and a salad bar. Facilities such as kitchen and central sitting areas remain unchanged, whereas previous staff dining rooms have been demolished.

Moving further, the former kitchen area was located at the north-left corner, which largely is untouched except the serving area for all food and drink l, it has been replaced with hot meals. Moving further, staff dining rooms are replaced by take away food and coffee bar. Tables and chairs cover the central and a large area of the cafe with newly introduced salad bar and recycling bins at the opposite edges. Regarding the place of the toilets, it is remained the same. Lastly, the most important addition is the barbecue and the outdoor seating arrangements. Barbecue is situated at the left side below the salad bar and five serving tables with different sizes are arranged in the straight line.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of the outdoor seating, coffee bar, and salad bar, while noting what remained unchanged. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. However, the description of the layout is occasionally imprecise; for instance, referring to the 'north-left corner' is slightly confusing, and the description of the serving tables is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that spatial relationships are described with greater clarity and precision to help the reader visualize the changes more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, moving from an overview to specific details. Paragraphing is used, though the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. Cohesive devices such as 'Moving further' and 'Regarding' are used, but they are somewhat repetitive and mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow of information in the second paragraph is slightly disjointed due to the way the spatial changes are listed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more natural progression between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'renovation', 'demolished', and 'arrangements' used correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'north-left corner' instead of 'north-west corner' and 'in the straight line' instead of 'in a straight line'. While the range is sufficient to convey the main points, there is limited use of less common or more sophisticated vocabulary that would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. Focusing on more precise descriptive language would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'it is remained the same' (should be 'it remains the same') and 'addition of the space for a outdoor seating' (should be 'an outdoor seating area'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly impede the flow. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the content, they are frequent enough to suggest that the writer does not yet have full control over complex structures.
