The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The design maps illustrate the differences between the layouts of a college cafe before and after it was renovated.
Overall, both the interior and exterior of the cafe have undergone significant modifications. The outdoor area has been transformed to include extra seating and a barbecue facility, while the indoor layout now features various new service counters and different upgrades.
Staff dining rooms were replaced with two different sections, one for Take away food and other one is a coffee bar. After the redesign, the Bin was replaced with a Recycling bin. There was also an addition of a new salad bar.
Minor changes are also seen near the kitchen area. The Serving area which used to serve foods and drinks has been completely replaced with a hot meals section. The outdoor area has also been made more accessible with the addition of doors which connect the cafe with Outdoor seating

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign. You provide a clear overview and highlight key changes such as the outdoor seating, the new service counters, and the kitchen modifications. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For example, you mention the staff dining room was replaced but do not specify where the new sections are located relative to the original layout. Additionally, ensure all labels from the diagram are accurately reflected; while you mention the 'hot meals section', describing the spatial shift more clearly would enhance the report. Overall, you have covered the requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the interior and exterior changes. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Overall', 'After the redesign', and 'Minor changes are also seen'. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the sentence 'Staff dining rooms were replaced with two different sections, one for Take away food and other one is a coffee bar' lacks a smooth connection. Improving the use of referencing and varied linking words would elevate the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significant modifications', 'accessible', and 'transformed'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'other one is a coffee bar' (which should be 'the other is a coffee bar') and 'The Serving area which used to serve foods'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'change' and 'replace' to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more flexible command of language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'other one is a coffee bar' (missing article/structure) and 'The Serving area which used to serve foods and drinks has been completely replaced' (the relative clause is slightly clunky). Punctuation is generally accurate, but there is a missing period at the end of the final sentence. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over complex structures. Focusing on article usage and sentence variety will help improve your accuracy.
