Student answer (Band 7.0)

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. The two diagrams illustrate the layout of a college café before it was redesigned and how it appears today.

Overall, the café has undergone significant modernization, marked by the removal of the staff dining rooms, the diversification of food service areas, and the introduction of waste recycling facilities.

In the past, the café featured a single serving area for all food and drink situated directly below the kitchen in the top-left corner. Below this serving counter was a large central space designated for tables and chairs.

The former staff dining rooms have been replaced by two separate counters: one for takeaway food and another for a coffee bar. The main area still accommodates tables and chairs, but the toilets have been removed. Additionally, the single bin has been replaced with recycling bins situated along the right boundary wall.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively summarizes the main features of the cafe redesign. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the removal of staff rooms and toilets, the addition of new service counters, and the introduction of recycling facilities. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. However, to reach a higher band, you could provide more specific spatial details, such as the relocation of the kitchen or the specific orientation of the new seating areas, to ensure all parts of the task are fully developed. The comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states is logical and easy to follow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The report is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction, the overview, and the detailed descriptions of the past and present layouts. Cohesive devices such as 'In the past', 'Additionally', and 'The former' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the comparison. The flow of information is smooth, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. The structure is coherent, and the relationship between the two diagrams is clearly established throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for describing diagrams and changes, such as 'undergone significant modernization', 'diversification', and 'accommodates'. The word choices are precise and contribute to a professional tone. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors. To improve further, you could incorporate more varied synonyms for 'removed' or 'replaced' to avoid repetition, and perhaps use more specific descriptive language regarding the layout, such as 'situated in the periphery' or 'centralized'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response exhibits a good range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and passive voice constructions (e.g., 'have been replaced', 'are situated'). The sentences are generally error-free, and the punctuation is accurate. You maintain a consistent tense usage when describing the past and present states. The control over grammar is strong, and there are no errors that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of accuracy throughout the text.
