Student answer (Band 6.0)
The schematic diagram represents a plan of the cafe and its renovated version in the present.
Overall, the modified version of the cafe has an expanded seating area. It also has replaced the dining rooms for the staff with other spots. The unoccupied space of the cafe is filled with various zones.
The cafe consist of two staff dining rooms which are opposite to the entry gateway. To the bottom left there exist toilets and a trash bin. The remaining area is occupied by the table and chairs arranged. There is a small block ,to the north-west of the hall, which comprises kitchen and a food counter for all kind of food and drinks.
The latest model involves numerous shifts, including the outdoor space where people can have seating arranged along with a barbecue section. Dining rooms for the staff were eliminated as a take away centre and a coffee bar was established. A new salad bar was set up in the empty spot to the corner. Lastly, the bin was substituted with large recycling bins.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe before and after the redesign. You have provided a clear overview and highlighted key changes such as the expansion of the seating area and the replacement of staff rooms. However, the report could be improved by including more specific data or comparative language to describe the scale of changes. For instance, mentioning the specific locations more precisely or quantifying the changes would strengthen the response. You have covered all parts of the task well, but the description of the 'before' state is slightly less detailed than the 'after' state, which affects the balance of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose: introduction, overview, and detailed descriptions of the two stages. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall', 'To the bottom left', and 'Lastly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the relationship between the two stages is more explicitly connected through comparative language rather than just listing features.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'schematic diagram', 'renovated', 'eliminated', and 'substituted'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'latest model' to describe a floor plan, which is slightly unnatural in this context. Additionally, 'all kind of food' should be 'all kinds of food'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and precise nouns related to architectural plans would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The cafe consist of' (should be 'consists') and 'there exist toilets' (should be 'there are toilets'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some awkward placements, such as the comma in 'small block ,to the north-west'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
