Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the kitchen, seating, and new additions like the outdoor area. However, the overview is somewhat repetitive, and the description of the layout is occasionally confusing. For instance, referring to the 'downside' of the kitchen is imprecise. While the main changes are identified, the report lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the information. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends (such as the expansion and diversification of services) rather than just listing features. The response is accurate in its reporting of the visual data, but the lack of precise spatial vocabulary limits the clarity of the comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph detailing the changes. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'moreover', 'however', and 'in the current layout', but they are sometimes used mechanically or with slight errors in placement. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the transition between describing the interior and the new exterior features could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more naturally rather than relying on simple additive conjunctions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for the description of the cafe's features. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'food materials' instead of 'food items' or 'drinks', and 'downside' instead of 'adjacent to' or 'south of'. There are also spelling errors like 'colleage' and 'cafetaria'. While the student attempts to use specific terms like 'redeveloped' and 'layout', the range is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, the student should focus on more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of key terms related to the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the kitchen', 'the west side'), subject-verb agreement ('there was two staff dining rooms'), and verb tense consistency ('is converted', 'is replaced'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are persistent throughout the text. The student should work on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect pluralization. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy would also help improve the score.
