Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans compare a college cafe now and how it was looking before renovation.

Overall, few things are included in new college cafe like salad bar and barbecue at north side. However, staff dining rooms are replaced by take away food and coffee bar. While outdoor seating areas are also introduced in renovated cafe.

Some of the things are remained at the similar place like they were before such as kitchen, tables and chairs and toilets at the corner. In addition, bins are replaced by recycling bins besides the toilets. Hot meals took the place of serving area in today`s cafe.

Moreover, tables and chairs are at same place in the middle of the j words cafe. Two new sections are included, first is salad bar that was not present in cafe before, and the other one is barbecue. Notably, there was not any outdoor seating area for people before redesigned cafe however, this seating area is included now.

There is a addition of two doors as well, one is beside the toilets and other one is with barbecue. Staff dining rooms were combined before but now they introduced separate take away food and coffee bar shops.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of the salad bar, barbecue, and outdoor seating, as well as the replacement of the staff dining rooms. However, the report lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the most significant changes. The description is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the location of tables and chairs, which is mentioned twice. While the key information is present, the organization of the data could be more analytical rather than just listing changes. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most striking transformations, such as the shift from a staff-focused layout to a more customer-oriented, versatile space.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and somewhat mechanical use of cohesive devices. For instance, the phrase 'Some of the things are remained' and the repetitive mention of 'tables and chairs' disrupt the flow. While there is an attempt to use linking words like 'Moreover' and 'In addition', the connection between sentences is sometimes weak. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'j words cafe', which appears to be a typo or an error in text generation. Improving the variety of linking expressions and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a distinct theme would enhance coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. There is a reliance on basic verbs like 'included', 'replaced', and 'took the place of'. Some phrasing is unnatural, such as 'how it was looking before' and 'today's cafe'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'There is a addition of two doors', where 'an' should be used. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise descriptive language related to spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'transformed', 'converted', or 'expanded'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect clarity. Examples include 'Some of the things are remained at the similar place' (passive voice error) and 'there was not any outdoor seating area' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
