Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided diagrams illustrate the developments that the college cafe underwent and show its latest structure.

Overall, the cafe saw significant renovations. Various new facilities were added to the cafe including barbecue, salad bar, recycling bins and outdoor seating.

The serving area in the kitchen where all kinds of food and drink were served before is designated only for the hot meals now. However, the two dining rooms for staff outside the kitchen have been converted to the take away food area and a coffee bar. Another bar has been opened on the right side of the kitchen to serve salad and the previous simple bins have been upgraded to the recycling bins.

There's a large new seating area right outside the cafe and a small area on the left side has been allocated for the barbecue. While the toilets, the kitchen and indoor seating which includes tables and chairs remained on the same places as before.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the cafe redesign, including the new facilities and the conversion of existing spaces. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the addition of the barbecue and coffee bar, and noted what remained unchanged. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for example, you mention the serving area is now only for hot meals, but clarifying the shift from a general serving area to a specific one would enhance the analysis. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme. The use of cohesive devices like 'However', 'While', and 'Another' helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the overview from the specific details. To improve, ensure that referencing is always clear; for instance, in the final paragraph, the phrase 'remained on the same places as before' is slightly awkward. Overall, the flow of information is logical and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovations', 'designated', 'converted', and 'allocated' appropriately. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'remained on the same places' (should be 'remained in the same location') and 'all kinds of food and drink were served before'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, incorporating more precise descriptive language regarding the layout or the nature of the changes would elevate the lexical score. The spelling is accurate throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the cafe saw significant renovations' (which is fine) followed by 'remained on the same places as before', which is a sentence fragment. Additionally, 'the kitchen and indoor seating which includes tables and chairs remained on the same places' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('include' should be plural to match 'tables and chairs'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the punctuation is generally handled well. Increasing the variety of complex structures would improve the score.
