Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response identifies the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and the conversion of staff rooms. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes, which is a requirement for Task 1. The description is somewhat fragmented, and the information is not always presented in a logical, comparative manner. While the key features are mentioned, the lack of a cohesive summary and the informal, disjointed structure prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you include an introductory overview that highlights the most prominent trends or changes observed between the two plans.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The response is difficult to follow due to poor paragraphing and a lack of cohesive devices. The text is broken into short, disjointed segments rather than a flowing report. There is a lack of logical progression between sentences, and the use of referencing (e.g., 'the toilets are same as past') is mechanical and sometimes unclear. The layout is fragmented, making it hard for the reader to track the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states. Improving the use of linking words such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', and 'subsequently' would significantly enhance the flow and logical structure of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, with several spelling errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'collage' for 'college', 'neer' for 'near', 'botom' for 'bottom', and 'Garbis' for 'garbage'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the spatial changes effectively. While the basic meaning is conveyed, the lack of precise terminology for describing layouts and changes (e.g., 'relocated', 'transformed', 'expanded') limits the score. You should focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to describing maps and plans to improve your precision and range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The plan show', 'cafe before redesign have'), missing articles ('in front of kitchen'), and incorrect sentence structures. The response relies heavily on simple sentences, and there is a lack of complex structures. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with erratic capitalization and sentence fragments. These errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
