Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two plans demonstrate the college cafe before it was re-structured and the way it looks now.

Overall, the kitchen and toilet areas remains the same. Initially, there was just one serving area for all the food and drink but now it has converted into mulitple serving points including converting staff dining rooms into food points. There was no outside dining option before but it is now established in the outside area of the cafe along with the Barbecue point.

Initially, there was only one serving area for all kinds of food and drink, however, after the re-design, now the cafe has multiple serving points for different kinds of meals and drinks namely hot meals, takeaway food, salad bar and coffee bar, particularly the staff dining rooms are now changed into takeaway food room and coffee bar. The bins are now converted into recycling bins. Toilets and kitchen remains the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the expansion of serving areas and the addition of outdoor seating. You have made relevant comparisons between the 'before' and 'now' states. However, the report is somewhat repetitive; the second and third paragraphs cover the same information regarding the serving points and the staff dining rooms. To improve, ensure that each paragraph introduces distinct information rather than restating points. The overview is clear, but the report would benefit from a more concise synthesis of the changes to avoid the redundancy noted in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'however', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the progression of information is slightly hindered by the repetition of details between the second and third paragraphs. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the structure could be more streamlined to ensure a smoother flow of information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific details, which helps the reader follow the development of the description.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 're-structured', 'multiple serving points', and 'recycling bins'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'mulitple' (spelling) and 'converted into... room' (collocation). While you attempt to use specific vocabulary related to the cafe layout, the range is somewhat limited, and some phrases are repeated. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and varied collocations to describe the changes, such as 'transformed', 'replaced', or 'repurposed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('kitchen and toilet areas remains', 'Toilets and kitchen remains') and minor punctuation issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to pluralization and verb agreement. The sentence variety is sufficient for the task, but more complex structures could be used with greater accuracy to demonstrate a higher level of control.
