Student answer (Band 5.0)

Looking on the picture it is shown that college cafe was redesigned in past and how it looks now , I shall recruit in further paragraph.

So in past picture tables and chairs took huge space and toilets was on right side corner on the edge of the tables and chairs. Bin was on north-west side having a little bit space and staff dining rooms was on north side partially divided into 2 rooms on the left edge of north kitchen was on top of it and after that some free space and below that serving area where you can find all food and drinks took a lil bit rectangular shape area.

On the other hand, Now tables and chair space is still same and toilets are also on same place, Bin is on same place but took some more area and staff dining rooms is relaced to take away food and coffee bar, Salad bar is also added in south side covering half of the west side of tables and chairs space, Serving area is replaced into Hot meals area but kitchen is on same place, They also added barbeque area below salad bar and tables n chairs area + also added outdoor seating in east side.

In last, nothing changed much but they added more spaces in it and just did a little bit move of places and closed the staff dining rooms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes between the two plans, but it fails to provide a clear overview or highlight the most significant trends. The description is overly focused on listing individual items rather than synthesizing the information. For example, the report lacks a clear summary of the overall transformation, such as the expansion of the cafe's facilities and the addition of outdoor seating. The information is presented in a somewhat disorganized manner, and the lack of a clear 'main features' summary prevents it from reaching a higher band. To improve, you should focus on grouping related changes and identifying the most important shifts in the layout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'In last' to conclude the report. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial changes described. For instance, the transition between the 'past' and 'now' descriptions is abrupt, and the lack of sophisticated linking words makes the text feel like a list of observations rather than a cohesive report. Improving the use of transition signals and ensuring each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple descriptors like 'big', 'same', and 'little bit'. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and non-standard collocations, such as 'I shall recruit in further paragraph' (which is unclear) and 'took a lil bit rectangular shape'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe spatial changes with precision. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to maps and diagrams, such as 'relocated', 'expanded', 'converted', or 'adjacent to', and avoid informal language like 'lil bit' or 'n'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'toilets was', 'staff dining rooms was'), missing articles (e.g., 'on right side corner'), and awkward sentence structures. The range of grammatical structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with some errors in punctuation and capitalization. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents a higher score. Focusing on consistent subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would be a good starting point for improvement.
