The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram represents two college cafe designs, one before redesign and the other one after. The plan consists of major changes and they are as follow.
The first plan shows the college cafe before changes were made, starting with the main kitchen on the far left side of the visual image provided where all kind of food and drinks are served. Next to the kitchen on the right side there is a secluded area for the staff dining room where there are two tables shown. The remaining plan shows table and chairs in the middle for college students, lastly Bin and Toilets are placed on the far left side of the plan next to one another.
The new redesigned cafe that is present today shows that efforts have been made to expand the kitchen where a new division has been created for hot meals, in comparison to the old cafe design the new cafe also includes a salad bar and a barbecue area that is outside the cafe premises. Inside the cafe we can also see two new more stations, the takeaway corner and the coffee bar which makes it easy for students that want their takeaway meals. the new cafe design has common sitting space for both staff and students present in the middle of the hall as well as new outdoor sitting . The old bin has been replaced by eco friendly recycling bins and toilets are present on the far left side of the plan same as before.
In conclusion the new and improved plan is more spacious, catering to different kind of needs for the ease of college staff and students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the kitchen expansion, the addition of new service stations, and the changes to seating areas. You have made relevant comparisons between the two plans, which is a key requirement for Task 1. However, the description is somewhat narrative rather than analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview clearly highlights the most significant changes—such as the shift from a segregated staff/student layout to a more integrated, multi-functional space—rather than just listing features sequentially. The conclusion is a bit subjective; focus on summarizing the spatial changes rather than evaluating the 'ease' of the design.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the 'before' and 'after' states. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'in comparison to' and 'the remaining plan shows,' though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the spatial descriptions. Overall, the progression of information is easy to follow, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the changes.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the layout, including terms like 'secluded area,' 'premises,' and 'eco-friendly.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'two new more stations' (which is redundant) and 'all kind of food' (should be 'all kinds of food'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Incorporating more precise collocations related to spatial design, such as 'reconfigured,' 'partitioned,' or 'centralized,' would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'they are as follow' (should be 'follows'), 'the new cafe also includes a salad bar and a barbecue area that is outside' (missing a comma before 'which' or 'that'), and the lack of capitalization at the start of the sentence 'the new cafe design...'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences that could be improved with better use of commas or semicolons. The majority of the text is error-free, but these minor slips prevent a higher score.
