The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

This plan shows how a college cafe has been redesigned with major changes in its structure.

Overall, cafe has been more modernised and suitable for college students, with the main changes being the removal of staff dining rooms and introduction of the takeaways and coffee bars. A good change is made by allowing outdoor seating and barbecue settings for students, leading to better productivity.

The kitchen is at the same place after renovation, whereas it was just serving all foods and drinks previously, but now it is serving hot meals. Before redesigning, there were two staff-dining rooms in the upper-right part of the cafe, which are now been removed and replaced by takeaway food area and coffee bars. The central area is largely retained for seating containing tables and chairs even after redesigning. In addition, a seating bar has been added along the left-hand side. providing extra place for students.

Toilets are kept at the same places, while recycle bin area is more spacious now. Hence, redesigning is providing a better place and food now for students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the removal of staff rooms and the addition of new facilities like the coffee bar and outdoor seating. However, the analysis is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical. For instance, the comment about 'better productivity' is subjective and not supported by the visual data provided. To reach a higher band, ensure that all observations are strictly based on the information in the diagrams rather than personal interpretation. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated to highlight the most significant structural transformations, such as the shift from a staff-focused layout to a more student-oriented, open-plan design.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in addition', and 'hence' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific details of the layout changes. However, the referencing is occasionally slightly ambiguous, such as in the sentence 'which are now been removed', where the grammatical structure disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of information is clear, and the reader can easily follow the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'redesigned', 'modernised', and 'spacious'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'serving all foods and drinks' instead of 'offering a wider range of food' or 'seating bar' instead of 'seating counter'. While the range is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the vocabulary used does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'cafe has been more modernised' (should be 'the cafe has been modernized') and 'which are now been removed' (should be 'which have now been removed'). Additionally, the article usage is inconsistent, with 'cafe' missing a determiner in the second paragraph. While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede the reader's understanding of the layout changes. To improve, focus on consistent subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice constructions when describing structural modifications.
