Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe layout, including the changes to the kitchen, dining areas, and the addition of new facilities. However, the description is often unclear and lacks precision. For example, phrases like 'on the middle there was Tables' and 'on account of, north side corner' are confusing and make it difficult to follow the spatial changes accurately. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states is not always logical or easy to follow, which limits the clarity of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'on account of' used to introduce a location, or 'in spite of' used incorrectly to introduce new information. The progression of ideas is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing, making the text feel disjointed. While there is an attempt at an overall structure, the lack of logical flow between sentences and the misuse of linking words hinder the reader's ability to follow the comparison effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'plain' instead of 'plan', 'replayesment' (likely meant as replacement), and 'view look experience'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe the layout or the changes, relying on basic descriptors. Some words are used in contexts that make the meaning unclear, such as 'stable' to describe the toilets. To improve, the student needs to focus on using accurate vocabulary related to spatial descriptions and common collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'there was Tables'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence structures that make the text difficult to parse. Complex sentence attempts are often faulty, such as 'in which was connected to north and south area'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary commas and capitalization errors. The majority of sentences contain errors, and the range of structures is quite limited, which prevents the writing from reaching a higher band score.
