The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagrams illustrate the look of a college cafe before and after it was redesigned.
Overall, it is clear that a cafe has undergone significant changes. The overall area of cafe has been extended and a cafe was equipped with some new facilities, while the interesting fact is that the kitchen and the toilets remained untouched.
Initially, a cafe offers space for tables and chairs, serving area (all food & drink), kitchen, staff dinning rooms, bin and toilets. Meanwhile, in the new plan the area of a cafe has been expanded in,which some new services such as barbecue and outdoor seating was introduced,Whereas the area of staff dinning rooms have been transformed into two separate rooms namely (take away food and coffee bar).
Furthermore, the serving area has been reconstructed to hot meals and a new salad bar area was developed in the left side of a cafe. Suprisingly, the kitchen and the toilets remained unchanged and stayed at the same place, while the space for bin was enlarged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, including the expansion of the area and the introduction of new facilities. You clearly contrasted the areas that remained unchanged, such as the kitchen and toilets, with those that were modified. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise spatial descriptions. For instance, instead of saying 'left side', you could use more specific directional language. Additionally, ensure that all labels from the diagram are accurately reflected; for example, the 'serving area' was not just reconstructed but relocated or expanded. Overall, you have provided a clear overview and sufficient detail to satisfy the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Meanwhile', 'Furthermore', and 'Whereas' to guide the reader through the comparison. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the punctuation around these devices could be improved to enhance flow. For example, the sentence 'the area of a cafe has been expanded in,which some new services...' contains awkward punctuation that disrupts the flow. Improving the variety and accuracy of your cohesive links will help you achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'undergone significant changes', 'reconstructed', and 'transformed'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'staff dinning rooms' should be 'staff dining rooms', and 'serving area has been reconstructed to hot meals' is grammatically awkward; it would be better to say 'reconstructed to accommodate hot meals'. There is also some repetition of the word 'cafe'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and ensure that your collocations are natural and accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'a cafe was equipped' should be 'the cafe was equipped', and 'some new services... was introduced' contains a subject-verb agreement error (should be 'were introduced'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and punctuation, such as the unnecessary comma in 'expanded in,which'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
