Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the transformation, such as the addition of the outdoor seating and the reconfiguration of the kitchen and dining areas. However, the overview is somewhat weak; while it mentions significant changes, it lacks a clear summary of the most striking transformations. The description of the 'Hot meals section' and the 'salad bar' is accurate, but the report could be improved by grouping features more logically to highlight the contrast between the old and new layouts. The response addresses the prompt adequately but lacks the analytical depth required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Looking first at', 'Moving onto'). There are also instances where the flow is disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition between the kitchen and the outdoor seating. While the overall arrangement is coherent, the lack of sophisticated linking words and occasional referencing errors (e.g., 'which were there before redesign but no there are') limit the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes to the cafe. However, there are several spelling errors ('searting', 'dinng') and word choice inaccuracies ('no' instead of 'now', 'booth' instead of 'booths'). The range of vocabulary is limited to basic descriptive terms. To achieve a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise terminology related to spatial changes, such as 'transformed', 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'replaced'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'there is significant changes' (subject-verb agreement), 'before which is than converted' (incorrect word usage), and 'no there are booth' (spelling and syntax). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with missing spaces after commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
