The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The picture presents the college cafe before and after it was redesigned.
Overall, some areas including table and chairs, toilets, kitchen remained the same. Whereas, new developments included outdoor seating, a barbecue place and a salad bar.
Before the cafe was redesigned, it had bins on the right side which are now converted into larger recycling bins. The former staff dining rooms are now transformed into two separate rooms, one for the take away food and other for the coffee bar. The center of the cafe consisting of tables and chairs remained unchanged. So did the corner on the right lower corner of the cafe including toilets.
The kitchen area at the top of the cafe remained at the same location whereas, the serving area for all foods and drinks is converted into hot meals area only. On the left side of the cafe a new salad bar is added. There was no outside seating area of the cafe before the redesign. After the development a large outside seating area was added with a barbecue place at the left corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign. You have clearly contrasted the 'before' and 'after' states, covering key changes such as the new outdoor seating, the salad bar, and the reconfiguration of the internal rooms. The overview is concise and highlights the most significant transformations. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide more precise spatial descriptions; for example, instead of saying 'the right lower corner', use more formal directional language. Additionally, ensure all comparisons are explicitly linked to the visual data to avoid minor inaccuracies in reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by area. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'before', and 'after', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother; some sentences feel slightly disconnected. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'the former staff dining rooms') is consistently clear throughout the text to enhance the flow between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redesigned', 'developments', 'transformed', and 'reconfiguration'. The language is generally appropriate for a report. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'remained' and 'added'. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise vocabulary related to spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'partitioned', or 'expanded'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without causing confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the center of the cafe consisting of tables and chairs remained unchanged' (which lacks a main verb structure or could be phrased more naturally) and 'the right lower corner of the cafe including toilets' (which is a fragment). Punctuation is generally accurate, but ensure that complex sentences are punctuated correctly to avoid run-on effects. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help demonstrate better control and flexibility.
