The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrates the designs of a college cafe before, and after it was redesigned.

The old design consists of a main building and a secondary building connected to it on its north-eastern side. The main building had tables and chairs, staff dining rooms and toilets while the secondary building consists of a kitchen and serving area.

After redesigning there are no newly constructed or demolished buildings but the layouts of the buildings were slightly changed. In the main building while the area consisting of tables and chairs was not changed the staff dining rooms were transformed into 2 sections, take away food and a coffee bar. The serving area in the secondary building is converted into hot meals section. A salad bar is located on the east end of the main building .A new out door seating is also introduced on the south of the main building while a barbecue area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the transformation of the staff dining rooms and the addition of the salad bar and outdoor seating. However, the response lacks a clear overview, which is essential for a Band 7 or higher. An overview should highlight the most significant changes, such as the conversion of internal spaces into more specialized service areas and the expansion of seating options. Additionally, the description of the barbecue area is incomplete, as the sentence ends abruptly without explaining its function or location relative to the other features. To improve, ensure you provide a concise summary of the overall trends in the introduction or as a separate paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into three paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the 'before' to the 'after' state. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and mechanical. For instance, the transition between the description of the main building and the secondary building could be smoother. The final sentence of the second paragraph is grammatically fragmented and lacks a cohesive link to the rest of the text. While the information is generally logical, the lack of sophisticated linking words or phrases makes the flow feel a bit disjointed. Using more varied transition signals would improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'transformed', 'converted', and 'demolished'. This allows you to convey the meaning clearly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'out door seating' (should be 'outdoor seating') and the phrasing 'the area consisting of tables and chairs was not changed'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise terminology for describing spatial changes, such as 'reconfigured', 'relocated', or 'integrated'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. For example, 'The plans illustrates' should be 'The plans illustrate' (subject-verb agreement), and 'a barbecue area' at the end of the text is a sentence fragment. Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma after 'before'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and a finite verb will greatly improve your accuracy.
