Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of the outdoor seating, barbecue, and coffee bar. However, the report lacks a clear overview of the most significant changes, which is a requirement for a high band score in Task 1. The description is somewhat informal and relies on personal commentary ('If we see', 'we can now put') rather than an objective, analytical summary of the visual data. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states could be more structured and precise to better highlight the transformation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of sophisticated cohesive devices. The use of 'Their is' (intended as 'There is') appears frequently, creating a mechanical feel. Transitions between ideas are often abrupt, and the connection between the 'before' and 'after' sections is not clearly signposted. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that flows naturally into the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic descriptors like 'new place', 'lot of sections', and 'big space'. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'closerly' (closely) and 'site' (sit). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the spatial changes with precision. To reach a higher band, you need to incorporate more specific terminology related to floor plans and design, such as 'layout', 'relocated', 'expanded', 'partitioned', or 'amenities', and ensure that collocations are used accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. The most persistent issue is the confusion between 'their' and 'there'. Additionally, there are errors in subject-verb agreement ('the kitchen... not easily accessible') and sentence structure ('If we look closerly... their is the outdoor seating'). The range of structures is limited to simple sentences, with few attempts at complex grammatical forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and sentence boundaries. A focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common homophone errors is essential.
