The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given map illustrates various designs of cafe of a college — before and after the construction.
Overall, a drastic change has seen after the renovation of the cafe. A lot of features has been added to enhance the cafe such as: Areas for hot meals, take away food, along with a coffee bar and a salad bar. Additionally, a barbecue place also appeared in the new cafe with several recycling bins.
It is cleary seen that, the design of cafe before the repairing was in an old structure; it had very less facilities and features. There was a small kitchen with a serving area. On one side there were staff dining rooms and some adequate space for tables, chairs and a toilet. Subsequently, the new cafe has a substantial range of amenities for the public — a new space for salad bar, hot meals, take away foods and coffee bar has been added. Also, an immense range of outdoor seating has placed for the people. In contrast, the old kitchen had just one bin and updated kitchen had multiple recycling bins in addition to a barbecue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign well. You successfully identify the key changes, such as the addition of the coffee bar, salad bar, and outdoor seating. However, the report lacks a clear, analytical overview of the spatial layout changes. While you mention the addition of amenities, you could improve by describing the shift in the cafe's footprint or the relocation of the kitchen. The comparison between the 'old' and 'new' is clear, but the description of the layout could be more precise to fully capture the transformation shown in the diagrams.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices like 'Additionally', 'Subsequently', and 'In contrast' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. The overview is placed as a separate paragraph, which is good practice, but the flow between the description of the old layout and the new one could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences, such as 'a drastic change has seen', are grammatically awkward, which slightly disrupts the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovation', 'amenities', and 'substantial range'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'before the repairing' (should be 'before the renovation') and 'has placed' (should be 'has been placed'). While you attempt to use more specific vocabulary, some phrasing is repetitive or slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations related to architectural changes and layout descriptions, and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'a drastic change has seen' (passive voice error), 'very less facilities' (should be 'fewer'), and 'updated kitchen had' (missing article). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing processes and changes in diagrams.
