The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Two plans are depicted here where the first plan illustrates the previous version of a college cafe, and the second plan reveals the redesigned version.

Before redesign, the plan has a large dining area with an attached kitchen beside a corner area. The entry and exit of the cafe is from the right side wall. There are two staff dining rooms together in the middle of the dining area and toilets included in the dining area in the opposite corner of the kitchen with a bin near of it on the right side. There is an entry from the dining to the kitchen through a door, and in the kitchen, there is a serving area from where all food and drink can be served to the dining.

However, after renovation of the cafe, an outdoor seating area is included with the lower portion of the plan for barbecue, and a salad bar is added inside the left portion of the dining. the staff dining rooms are converted to take away food and coffee bar areas. Hot meals are being served instead of all food and drink from the kitchen. Size and location of the toilet are unchanged while the recycling bins got larger at the same place near the toilet.

In conclusion, the cafe has been renovated where the indoor area is same as the earlier plan, but some functions are included or excluded in it excluding the outdoor barbecue area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe plans well. You successfully identify the key changes, such as the addition of the outdoor seating area, the salad bar, and the conversion of the staff rooms. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention that some functions are included or excluded, it lacks a clear summary of the most significant structural changes. Additionally, some descriptions are a bit repetitive, and the conclusion contains a slight contradiction by stating the indoor area is the same while also noting the addition of the salad bar. To improve, ensure your overview highlights the most striking transformations clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition words like 'However' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'near of it' or 'in the middle of the dining area'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the 'before' and 'after' states. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking phrases and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it', 'the latter') is used more precisely to avoid repetition.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redesigned', 'renovation', and 'converted'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'near of it' instead of 'near it' or 'the entry and exit of the cafe is from the right side wall'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Try to incorporate more precise spatial vocabulary and collocations related to architectural descriptions to enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the plan has a large dining area' (should be 'the plan showed'), 'near of it', and 'Hot meals are being served instead of all food and drink'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as starting a sentence with a lowercase 'the'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing past and present states.
