Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan represents a college canteen before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Overall, it is vivid that several modifications had been taken place in the redesigning of cafe. Some places remained the same, while others were changed.

After analyzing the map in detail, it is clear that serving area for all food and drink located in the North-west direction in the previous map, while it has been replaced with the Hot meals in the later map for same direction. However, the area for kitchen has been same in both maps. Moreover, salad bar has been constructed in the south-west corner in the new map, whilst this corner was empty in the previous map.

Furthermore, the North-east corner has been reserved for recycling bin in both canteens. Moving towards the center of the cafe, two separate rooms reserved for staff dining, whereas it has been converted into Take away food and coffee bar. Toilets has located on same place in both maps. in addition, outdoor area of canteen has been built for barbecue, and sitting chairs has been placed in the new map, whilst it was not build in previous map.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, identifying key changes such as the addition of the salad bar, the conversion of the staff dining area, and the new outdoor facilities. However, the overview is somewhat weak; 'it is vivid that several modifications had been taken place' is not a natural way to summarize the main trends. While the key features are mentioned, the comparison between the two plans could be more analytical. The description of locations is generally accurate, but the report lacks a cohesive summary of the overall transformation, such as the shift from a more enclosed layout to one with more diverse food options and outdoor seating.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'whilst' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'After analyzing the map in detail'. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is logical, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be improved to better group related changes, such as grouping all food-related changes together versus structural changes.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the changes clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'modifications' and 'constructed'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice or collocation, such as 'it is vivid' (instead of 'it is evident'), 'had been taken place' (incorrect tense/collocation), and 'sitting chairs' (redundant). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, such as 'kitchen has been same', 'Toilets has located', and 'it was not build'. These errors are noticeable but do not generally impede communication. The use of passive voice is appropriate for a report of this nature, but the control over tense consistency (switching between past and present) is inconsistent. Improving the accuracy of basic verb forms and ensuring consistent tense usage would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
